Tallow balm is having a moment, and small jars sell for $20 to $40. You can make a big jar at home with two ingredients: rendered beef tallow and a liquid oil. Whipping it while it sets turns hard tallow into a soft, fluffy balm.
Ingredients (about 250 ml / 1 cup)
- 125 ml (1/2 cup) rendered beef tallow
- 30 to 45 ml (2 to 3 tbsp) olive, jojoba or sweet almond oil
- A few drops of essential oil (optional)
Method
- Melt the tallow gently in a bowl set over simmering water, or in short bursts in the microwave.
- Stir in the oil, and the essential oil if using.
- Refrigerate 20 to 40 minutes, until the edges are opaque and the centre is soft-set, like soft butter.
- Whip with a hand mixer 3 to 5 minutes, until white and fluffy.
- Spoon into clean, dry jars with lids.
Notes
- More oil makes a softer balm; less makes a firmer one.
- Keep it cool and out of the sun; it softens above room temperature. Use within about 6 months.
- Try a small amount on a patch of skin first, as with any new product.
